Teens World Foundation (TWF), an organization committed to empowering and mentoring teenagers from underserved communities, proudly launched the inaugural cohort of its SkillXplore Program. On Sunday, October 6, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria, TWF welcomed 25 teenagers, all on full scholarships, to embark on an intensive training journey in relevant tech skills. This event represents a major milestone in the foundation’s mission to equip young Nigerians with marketable, in-demand skills that align with global standards and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically goals 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
The onboarding event began with a warm and inspirational welcome address from Kossy Okonkwo, the founder of Teens World Foundation. A visionary and advocate for youth empowerment, Kossy emphasized the need for young Nigerians to rewrite the nation’s story by gaining skills that are not only relevant but also transformative. She reiterated TWF’s commitment to creating equal opportunities for all, regardless of background, ensuring that every teenager has access to the tools and mentorship needed to excel.
A Call to Innovation: Exploring Your Future in Tech and Beyond
The event’s keynote speech was delivered by Farhan Sodiq, a Senior Software Developer with experience in Embedded System development, Product management and Operations. His address, titled “Exploring Your Future in Tech and Innovation,” encouraged the teens to see beyond their immediate circumstances and envision a future where their skills could drive Nigeria’s technological and economic growth. Farhan emphasized the importance of incremental steps in learning and becoming the best at what they do, urging them to take full advantage of the opportunities presented through the SkillXplore program.
Interactive Icebreaker: Teens Showcase Innovative Ideas
In an effort to stimulate creativity and team spirit, participants engaged in an interactive icebreaker session where they were divided into four groups and challenged to develop innovative solutions based on random African-themed keywords. The groups exceeded expectations, presenting groundbreaking ideas:
- Group 1 – “Afrik”: An immersive experience blending African music, fashion, and Virtual Reality (VR), offering a digital platform where users can explore African culture.
- Group 2 – “Eyo Fest”: A tech-based initiative to celebrate and promote African festivals globally using robotics. Dancing robots interact with humans, gathering data to enhance future festival experiences.
- Group 3 – “Suca Bot”: A cutting-edge machine that processes cassava products instantly and offers customized servings, merging tech with local food practices for convenience in marketplaces.
- Group 4 – “E-Circle”: An estate ride system inspired by Wakanda’s futuristic transport, offering a GPS-enabled neighborhood shuttle for safe and convenient commuting.
These innovative concepts demonstrate the potential and creativity of these teenagers. The session aimed to show that through programs like SkillXplore, teens can become problem-solvers and innovators, capable of addressing real-world challenges.
Overview of Training Tracks and Mentorship
The SkillXplore program offers a comprehensive curriculum covering various tracks, including Software Development, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Product Management, Product Design, and Robotics. Representatives from Pluralcode Academy, Queen, and Unified Scientific and Creative Operations (USCO), Samuel Ufoeze, provided detailed overviews of the training, emphasizing the hands-on and practical approach that ensures students not only learn but also apply their skills in real-world scenarios.
Participants also had the opportunity to interact with their mentors and fellow trainees during the meet-and-greet session, fostering a sense of community and collaboration that will be instrumental throughout the program. A tour of the training facilities followed, highlighting the state-of-the-art resources available to each participant.
Empowering Teens with the Right Tools: Laptops Donated by Aptech Computer Education
In line with the program’s mission to provide not only knowledge but also the tools needed to excel, each participant received a Computer donated by Aptech Computer Education. This gesture underscores the importance of partnerships in making the SkillXplore program a success. Teens World Foundation expressed gratitude to Aptech and its training partners, Pluralcode Academy and USCO, for their unwavering support.
Join Us in Empowering the Next Generation
The SkillXplore program is not just a training initiative; it is a movement to change the lives of teenagers from underserved communities. TWF invites organizations and individuals who share this vision to join in expanding the program, offering even more diverse training tracks, including fashion, catering, and Photography, Hair Business etc.
As the program aligns with the SDGs, Kossy Okonkwo highlighted that they are not only providing teens with technical skills but also equipping them with entrepreneurship and interpersonal skills, which are crucial for their success in the evolving global economy. With the system and support network TWF has put in place, every participant is set on a path to success, ensuring that no stone is left unturned.
What’s Next for SkillXplore
The SkillXplore program is an ongoing initiative, and TWF is excited to announce that applications for the next cohort will open soon. This upcoming phase will expand beyond tech skills to include other relevant and marketable trades, further fulfilling TWF’s vision of providing a holistic and equal platform for all young talents.
The teenagers in the current cohort will engage in a year-long training period, culminating in a graduation ceremony where they will showcase live products developed during the program. TWF is committed to supporting these teens every step of the way, ensuring that their journey does not end at graduation but continues as they become agents of change in their communities.
